Piano Tuition

I discovered early in my career how rewarding teaching the piano can be, and I have now been teaching for over 30 years. During that time I have worked with students at every stage, from those taking their first steps in music to adults returning to the instrument later in life.

I have guided pupils through graded examinations and diploma-level study, as well as preparing students for auditions to music conservatoires. My aim is always to build strong musical foundations while helping each student develop confidence, technique and enjoyment at the piano.

I am currently based in Torbay, Devon, where I teach in a number of local schools as well as offering private lessons outside school hours. I hold a current DBS certificate and regularly update my safeguarding training. Please feel free to get in touch if you would like any further information about piano lessons.

My teaching ethos breaks down into 3 principles:

Enjoyment
"We don't work the piano,

we play it"

First and foremost, enjoyment is at the heart of learning an instrument. The ability to create music is one of life’s great pleasures.

Because my lessons are one-to-one, I can tailor them to each student—using music they genuinely enjoy, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Understanding
"If I can do it, so can you"

Many students are put off reading music because it can seem like an uncrackable code. I introduce new ideas and concepts in context, integrating theory with playing rather than keeping them separate.

Over the years, I’ve developed a range of ways to explain the elements of music, allowing me to tailor each lesson to the individual student.

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything"

Plato

Improvement
"Building confidence, one step at a time."

Learning an instrument brings benefits far beyond simply playing the notes on the page. Studying the piano develops focus, discipline, and patience.

Progress can be measured in many ways, including graded music exams, which give students clear goals to work towards. I regularly prepare students for ABRSM exams, both classical and jazz. While exams can be a valuable tool, they’re not for everyone, so I take a flexible approach tailored to each student.
